Piceance Development Project

ExxonMobil needed construction expertise to take roughly 36 miles of pipeline across a remote region in northwestern Colorado. In addition to installation of the 3-inch to 26-inch-diameter pipe, the work included fabrication and installation of block valves and pigging facilities. Other challenges included working around and next to numerous existing gas pipelines in the area, including several miles of parallel construction.

Barnard came onboard ready to assist ExxonMobil with design workshops, constructability reviews, estimating dewatering design, value engineering, a bridge support system and installation and shoring for stream and utility crossings. Our Team completed the project with zero reportable environmental releases or events and with a weld repair rate of less than 1 percent despite working in a high altitude environment. The right-of-way ranged from steep mountainous terrain to relatively flat creek valleys with high groundwater. The project was so remote that all office communication was conducted via satellite. Where local roads were restricted, all employees were bused to the work site. At peak construction, 391 employees worked on the project. We also took on the extensive coordination with existing pipeline owners and operators in the area with success.
