Barnard Project Awarded 2010 Edison Award!
Barnard’s Round Butte Dam Selective Water Withdrawal Project gained international recognition June 14, winning the 2010 Edison Award, the electric utility industry’s highest honor. Recognized for innovation, leadership and “exceptional contributions to the industry,” co-owners, Portland General Electric and the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation now run “the only known floating surface fish collection facility coupled with power generation in the world,” according to the Edison Electric Institute’s award announcement.

The completed project resulted from incredible partnership between the co-owners, more than 20 federal, state, and local agencies, and the public in addressing fish transfer challenges on a network of rivers and dams in central Oregon during relicensing of the hydroelectric facilities at the dams. That partnership broadened with the addition of CH2M Hill, as Design Engineer, and Barnard, as prime contractor, in 2006 when we embarked on a Design-Assist contract.

Today, after just six months of operation, the SWW has processed more than 100,000 fish that will help restore Chinook, sockeye and steelhead salmon to the Deschutes River Basin. For a complete history of the project, see our project description (linked to the title above) or go to www.deschutespassage.com.
