Barnard Construction Project Safety Awards

Each year, Barnard Construction presents a Project Safety Award at its annual Christmas party. At the end of each year one project is selected and recognized as the safest project of the year. Only projects completed before the end of that specific year are eligible. The selection committee includes Barnard’s Operations Managers, Safety Director, President, and CEO.

2007 Project of the Year Safety Award
Weber Dam Modifications Project

The Weber Dam Project required excavating 20 feet below the toe of an active dam while dealing with continual dewatering challenges. The confines of the project site created traffic congestion with many pieces of equipment operating at the same time. In addition, the haul road had blind corners and slippery soils. Add to these conditions, 100-degree heat and the public traveling through the site and one can understand why this project earned the 2007 Barnard Safety Award for the 40,756 man-hours worked with no OSHA-recordable injuries.

2006 Project of the Year Safety Award
San Xavier Farm Rehabilitation

This project received Barnard’s safety award in acknowledgement of the 91,678 man-hours worked without injury. The award recognizes the factors that posed challenges at the site, such as high heat, severe temperature swings, dust, flooding, and the fact that the site was bisected by a major traffic artery, yet still crews were able to complete the project injury-free.

2005 Project of the Year Safety Award
Fern Ridge Dam Emergency Repair

This project did not experience a single injury accident during the more than 54,000 man-hours on the job. Site conditions and natural elements created problems to overcome during a very tight schedule. Crews worked double shifts in a narrow and very congested work area that allowed limited access.

2004 Project of the Year Safety Award
Owens Lake Dust Mitigation Projects: Phase III South

The 2004 Project of the Year Safety Award was presented to the Owens Lake Dust Mitigation, Phase III South, having worked a total of 102,727 man-hours with only one lost-time injury. The project's safety concerns included severe environmental, temperature and climatic changes, exposure to heavy dust and alkali water, working around water and mud, extensive equipment loading and hauling operations, limited access, limited communications, and oversight of a large number of contractors.

2003 Project of the Year Safety Award
Owens Lake Dust Mitigation Projects: Lakewide Operations and Maintenance

The 2003 Project of the Year Safety Award was presented to the Owens Lake Dust Mitigation Project - Lakewide Operations and Maintenance, having worked a total of 117,085 man-hours without a lost-time injury. The project's safety concerns faced by employees were severe environmental, temperature, and climatic changes; extended work areas with crews spread over 2,400 acres of land stretching up to 17 miles away from the office area; exposure to potential harmful agents; working over, around, and in water and mud a large portion of the time; extensive manual and equipment operations; working in pits and vaults with limited access; and communication.

2002 Project of the Year Safety Award
Owens Lake Dust Mitigation Projects: Managed Vegetation

The recipient of the 2002 Project of the Year Safety Award was the Owens Lake Managed Vegetation Dust Mitigation Project, having worked 219,193 man-hours without a single lost-time injury. The project's hazardous conditions included: severe temperature and climate changes; extended work areas; exposure to potentially harmful agents; extensive manual and equipment lifting operations and procedures; work in pits and vaults with limited access; and generally a very labor-intensive project.

2001 Project of the Year Safety Award
DeCordova Bend Dam

The DeCordova Bend Dam project was the first recipient of this award. At this project, crews worked 44,137 man-hours without a lost-time injury.

Other Safety Highlights:

  • Wasatch County Water Efficiency Project: 61,879 man-hours worked without injury
  • Dulce Lake Dam & Lower Mundo Lake Dam: 49,860 man-hours worked without injury
  • Lower Area One Remediation: 119,230 man-hours worked without injury
  • North Unit Irrigation RCC Canal Lining: 11,700 man-hours worked without injury
  • Black Lake Dam Modification: 17,183 man-hours worked without injury
