Marty L. Jorgensen
President
Marty Jorgensen has been working in all areas of the pipeline and heavy civil construction industry for over 30 years. Mr. Jorgensen worked for 12 years as an operator, welder, laborer, foreman, and superintendent for a pipeline company before joining the Barnard Companies in 1989. He became President of Barnard Pipeline, Inc. in 2000.
Throughout his career, Marty has gained a thorough understanding of the pipeline and construction industries. His experience in oil and gas pipelines includes mainline construction with pipe diameters up to 42 inches, river crossings, wetlands, and construction in extremely difficult terrain, from remote mountainous regions to congested urban locations. He has been especially instrumental in the successful estimating and construction of these projects as well as public works contracts across the country. His attention to quality, safety, and open communications contributed to a national Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award on one project and a Bureau of Reclamation Safety Award on another recently.
Marty’s experience in alternative contracts, including shared-risk, perfectly complements his team-building and partnering style of management. His focus on quality includes the recent achievement of 60 miles of pipeline in rugged terrain with no anomalies.
Zach Bowler
Oil & Gas Business Development
Zach Bowler joined the Barnard Companies while still working on his B.S. in Construction Engineering Technology from Montana State University in 1997. Since then, he has developed expertise in a number of areas in heavy civil construction work, from oil and gas pipelines to underground utility work, earthwork, concrete structures, bridges, riprap, dam rehabilitation, soil-cement and roller-compacted concrete. Early in his career, he was part of a team that earned a Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award from the Associated General Contractors of America acknowledging his ability to work closely with owners and engineers while keeping a project on schedule and budget and operating safely.
More recently, Mr. Bowler’s work has focused on identifying fast-track projects in the oil and gas industry that match Barnard Pipeline’s capabilities and availability. His expertise in pipelines involves major river crossings, environmentally sensitive pipeline installation and monitoring, crossing wetlands, and construction in extremely difficult terrain. Mr. Bowler prepares bids ranging from $1 million to $500 million. His responsibilities have also included quality control, purchasing, scheduling, manpower and equipment management. He is instrumental in subcontract administration and contract negotiations.
Joe Granquist
Project Manager
Mr. Granquist adds to the Barnard Pipeline team a strong field background coupled with management skills. While earning a B.S. in Construction Management from the University of Washington, he worked for General Construction (Kiewit) and RCI (Parsons), gaining experience in commercial manufacturing and facility and heavy civil construction.
At Barnard, he has worked on a variety of pipeline and civil projects, from high-pressure gas to heavy earthmoving, dam construction and rehabilitation, tunneling, sanitary sewer, and water delivery. These projects have ranged from remote locations to narrow city streets and have included road and railroad bores, multiple landowners, strict environmental/endangered species monitoring and compliance, traffic control, public safety, and operation qualification programs. Most recently, Mr. Granquist has focused on oil and gas pipeline project management. He works directly with project owners and is responsible for quality control, purchasing, scheduling, manpower and equipment management, subcontract administration, and contract negotiations, among other duties.
Mike Jones
Project Manager/Estimator
Mr. Jones’ 24 years in the heavy-civil construction industry encompass experience as a heavy equipment operator, laborer, and project engineer, as well as the management skills necessary to successfully and safely run a complex oil and gas project as a Superintendent and Project Manager. He holds a B.S. in Environmental Engineering with a minor in Business Management from Montana Tech of the University of Montana.
Since joining the Barnard Companies in 1994, he has worked on a variety of projects, most recently focusing on fast-track oil and gas work in the high altitude mountainous terrain of northwestern Colorado. He works directly with project owners and stakeholders including landowners and agency representatives. He was a member of a Barnard team that earned a national Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award for close collaboration of all stakeholders on an innovative project.
Douglas Martin, C.S.P. 
Corporate Safety Director
Doug Martin has extensive experience in all areas of safety in the heavy civil construction industry. Mr. Martin earned a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska and an M.B.A. from the University of Denver. He holds both Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Certified Safety Professional (C.S.P.) certifications.
Mr. Martin came to Barnard having developed, implemented, trained, and monitored a complete safety program for a large regional contractor. At Barnard, he is responsible for health and safety program development and maintenance, monitoring and auditing of workman’s compensation and insurance claims, updating all programs to reflect the most current DOT, OSHA, MSHA, NFPA, and ANSI safety and health regulations, maintaining Barnard’s safety recordkeeping system, conducting safety audits, and submitting inspection reports. This position involves regular training visits to project sites. His work history provides a valuable combination of safety, insurance, and risk management work. He is seasoned at working with owners and regulators as well as engineers and crews.
Robert Wheatley
Site Safety Educator
Robert Wheatley oversees Barnard’s safety and training programs in the field. A certified OSHA Outreach Trainer, he has been a Safety Educator for more than five years. He brings a depth of experience to this position, having worked in construction with the Barnard Companies for 20 years.
Prior to his focus on safety education, Mr. Wheatley worked as a superintendent, an oilfield floor and derrick operator, an equipment operator, and a journeyman carpenter. In 2009, he has completed OSHA courses in Four Hazards, Respiratory Training, Fall Protection Awareness and Inspection, Confined Space, Electrical Hazard, and Control of Hazardous Energy. In addition, he is a certified instructor in mobile cranes and rigging. In his position, he administers project-specific health, safety and environmental training programs onsite as well as conducts pre-employment safety, drug screening, and environmental training programs.
Mike Laforge
Equipment Superintendent
Mike. Laforge has more than 35 years of experience in the heavy civil construction business, and has focused on equipment maintenance and management for the past 21 years. His professional attention to detail has ensured that the equipment Barnard brings to the field is in top condition and ready for operation.
At Barnard, Mr. Laforge coordinates and supervises mechanics and oilers for each individual project. He oversees maintenance operations and records on all equipment and assists in establishing an equipment budget as well as the acquisition and disposition of the company’s equipment. Prior to his focus on equipment management, Mr. Laforge served as project superintendent on several utility and riprap projects. He has been an equipment operator, laborer, equipment oiler, and a mechanic.
John Grife
Project Superintendent
Mr. Grife has more than 30 years of pipeline construction experience. He has worked in all aspects of pipeline projects, from laborer to superintendent.
Mr. Grife has worked on a broad ranged of pipelines – up to 42 inches in diameter – across all types of terrain. These projects have taken him throughout North America, from New York to Washington State. His experience also encompasses pipeline installation, fabricated assemblies, requalification work, and river crossings.
Andrew Engebretson
Project Engineer
Mr. Engebretson leapt directly into fast-track oil and gas construction work at Barnard Pipeline after earning a B.S. in Construction Management from North Dakota State University. Even before completing his studies, he spent five years working in a variety of oilfield positions for Nabors Drilling USA.
As project engineer, Mr. Engebretson’s duties encompass planning, estimating, quality control, cost control, progress reporting, surveying, quantity tracking, purchasing and subcontractor coordination. He also obtains, reviews, and forwards product submittals to owners.
