Project Details

Barnard Construction entered into this design-build project with Engineer Paul C. Rizzo Associates to eliminate standing water in the drainage swales surrounding the cooling pond at Florida Power & Light's Manatee Power Plant. Located near Sarasota, the Manatee Power Plant is cooled by a 3,800-acre man-made reservoir. This closed-loop cooling pond had experienced recurring problems with both its underground and surface drainage systems. The project eliminated several wet areas on the embankment and standing water in the surrounding swales by through the design adn construction of an improved surface and underdrain system. This fast-paced project involved design, followed by installation primarily of 18-inch drainpipe as well as improvements to the toe drain system and installation of new sumps and cleanouts.
