Barnard Pipeline’s work on ExxonMobil’s Piceance Development Project outside of Rifle, Colorado, entailed concurrent work on numerous high-pressure gas pipelines across varied terrain. The project included installing gathered gas lines; combined liquid lines; clean condensate lines; raw water line; water disposal and distribution lines; and fiber optic and electrical cables. Concrete-coating, fusion-bonded epoxy coating of welds, hydro-excavation, structural concrete and hydrostatic testing were other activities associated with completing the work. The project encompassed pipe fabrication of several facilities, including above-ground flanged connections, valve sets, and various pig launcher and receiver locations. Located in a remote region of northwestern Colorado, the right-of-way on this job ranged from steep mountainous terrain to relatively flat creek valley with high groundwater. The project was so remote that all office communication was conducted via satellite. Due to local road restrictions, all employees were bused to the work site. At peak construction, 391 employees worked on the project. Other challenges included working around and next to numerous existing gas pipelines in the area, including several miles of parallel construction. Extensive coordination with existing pipeline owners and operators was required. Barnard Pipeline completed the project with zero reportable environmental releases or events and with a weld repair rate of less than 1 percent.
