The Tongue River Dam near Decker, Montana, was constructed between 1937 and 1940 to store irrigation water and provide flood protection. A flood in 1978 caused extensive damage to the concrete spillway and threatened to breach the dam. A major rehabilitation of the dam was implemented in 1997; Barnard was awarded a contract to construct a 650-foot-wide roller-compacted concrete emergency spillway, cofferdams, and a fabricated steel flume diversion. Working within a tight schedule and under extreme climatic conditions, Barnard was able to complete this challenging project on schedule.
