The Ute Water Conservancy District supplies water for Grand Junction, Colorado, and its surrounding area, which includes more than 110,000 people. An existing high-pressure, 24-inch line transmitted raw water from Jerry Creek Reservoir approximately 20 miles to the water treatment plant, but could not continue to supply the area with sufficient water due to its deteriorating condition. Barnard Construction replaced approximately 16 miles of the existing water line with 48-inch and 54-inch mortar-lined, tape-coated steel pipe. Pipeline appurtenances included dozens of concrete structures housing blowoff and air/vac valving and piping along with five large concrete vault structures containing extensive flow and surge control valving and mechanical equipment. In addition, much of the pipeline alignment paralleled State Highway 65 requiring some night work and continuous traffic control management. A joint venture was formed with Affholder, Inc. to construct 2.5 miles of 10-foot-diameter tunnel using a Tunnel Boring Machine. Barnard Construction successfully completed a tremendous amount of Value Engineering focused on providing the Owner with a reduced cost and higher quality product.
