The South Central Lubbock Drainage Improvement Project consisted of construction of approximately 13 miles of gravity flow stormwater pipeline, ranging in size from 24-inch to 72-inch internal diameter pipe. The pipeline is used to prevent flooding around the city lakes and is designed to contain a 100-year flood. The pipeline connects 11 city lakes to a system that conveys the stormwater away from the lakes and into Yellowhouse Canyon. Unique aspects of the job included over 14,000 LF of tunneling in hard rock and nearly 30,000 LFof cast-in-place pipe. Open-cut excavations were in excess of 40 feet; however, the majority of the pipeline was between 20 feet and 30 feet deep through residential streets.
